Returnable container management: Optimizing logistics for manufacturers
ثبت نشده
چکیده
This arrangement represents an excellent example of waste and cost reduction, because the containers are durable and reusable. Ideally, there should be little cost for the OEM associated with them beyond initial purchase: containers may need routine maintenance and are replaced as they wear out in the normal course of events. For the suppliers, there should be no cost at all. By driving waste and cost out of the system, product prices can be kept low and competitiveness maintained.

The impact of RFID on management of returnable containers
Inventory shrinkage is a common problem in the management of returnable containers. RFID-based container tracking systems have been proposed as a possible solution. Benefits of RFID-based tracking of returnable transport items such as pallets, kegs and boxes are documented in several case studies, but have so far hardly been analyzed from a theoretical perspective. In this article, we analyze t...
متن کاملThe Event Management Problem in a Container Terminal
The container terminal is a convergence point in the cargo flow, being a focal point for multiple supply chains. The operations performed in a container terminal involve one of the most complex environments within the transport industry. A container terminal plays a critical role in international shipping and is under pressure to cope with increasing container traffic. This paper presents a mul...
متن کاملAn optimization model for management of empty containers in distribution network of a logistics company under uncertainty
In transportation via containers, unbalanced movement of loaded containers forces shipping companies to reposition empty containers. This study addresses the problem of empty container repositioning (ECR) in the distribution network of a European logistics company, where some restrictions impose decision making in an uncertain environment. The problem involves dispatching empty contain...
متن کاملA New Framework for the Management of Returnable "Containers" Within Open Supply Networks
New logistics models – physical internet, pooling, control towers, reusable containers management – require an item-level traceability of physical shipping units that is independent of the partners involved in the supply chains. Current information systems architectures match this need by interfacing heterogeneous systems with each other. Such architecture can’t meet the challenges brought by n...
متن کاملGlobal Intermodal Tank Container Management for the Chemical Industry
The scale of the global chemical industry is enormous: in 2003, the total value of global production exceeded US$1.7 trillion. International logistics is especially crucial to the high-value chemicals industry, since raw materials sources, production facilities, and consumer markets are distributed globally. Fluctuating demand, imbalanced trade flows, and expensive transportation equipment nece...
